Timing of Baku-Russian border highway’s reconstruction completion announced

Azeryolservis JSC of Azerbaijani Transport Ministry plans to complete reconstruction of the Baku-Guba-Russian border highway by 2015, head of the company Javid Gurbanov told journalists on Friday.

"The remaining section from Gandob to the Russian border will also be reconstructed. We will try to complete the reconstruction of the road by 2015," Gurbanov said.

He said at the moment, earth works are being carried out on the remaining area, in particular, 55 percent of work has been initiated. The process of land acquisition for the project has already been completed, compensation for which is almost paid off.

The total length of the Baku-Guba-Russian border highway is 208 kilometers, but after reconstruction, it will be slightly shorter.

In 2009, the company completed work on laying concrete pavement from 16 to 134 km (118 kilometers) on the section of the Baku-Guba-Russian border road.

As part of the reconstruction of the road, construction and replacement of the communications infrastructure was carried out, 20 bridges, nine passages for the driving of cattle and three overpasses were built.

The cost of work was estimated at $118.7 million. The funding was mostly covered the loan from the loans of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to the tune of $100 million, the remaining part was covered by the government of Azerbaijan.
