Uzbekistan to produce tablet computers

Uzbek-Indian Joint Venture Olive Telecom has begun production of the Olive PadV-T300 tablet, a representative of the JV co-founder, Uzbektelekom JSC told Trend on Wednesday.

According to the source, a test batch of tablets has been made. It is expected that they will go on sale in the third quarter of this year.

The tablet is equipped with a 1 GHz processor and runs with a Android 4.0 (Ice-cream Sandwich) operating system. The tablet's screen resolution is 480x800 pixels. Screen size - 180 mm (seven inches). The gadget is equipped with a 0.3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 and earphone jack.

The memory capacity of the device is four gigabytes, but can be expanded to up to 32 GB. The battery capacity is 3600 mA.

The Olive PadV-T300 tablet PC will be available in the market through Uzbektelecom's Uzmobile. The estimated price is 375 000 soum.

As reported, in February 2012, Indian Olive Telecommunications and Uzbektelecom JSC, the national telecommunications operator of Uzbekistan, signed the founding documents of the joint venture "Olive Telecom" on assembling smart phones, CDMA-450 standard modems, tablet computers and Internet set-top boxes, production of CDMA-450 smart phones.

In January this year, the joint venture began production of equipment for users of the CDMA-450 standard cellular network in Uzbekistan.

The design capacity of the joint venture in the initial phase will be 10,000 CDMA-modems, 38,000 mobile and fixed CDMA-terminals, and 13,500 tablets per year. The project also includes the development of smartphones of CDMA-450 standard.

Initially, the company plans to produce up to 5,000 units per year with further plans to increase the range and volume of production.

The project also provides for the localization of production with a gradual increase in its share in the development of production.

The cost of the first phase of the project amounted to $6 million.

JV is in the Navoi free industrial and economic zone (FIEZ).

National Mobile Operator Uzbektelecom JSC provides services to local, long distance and international voice telephony, data network services, and others.

In 2004, Uzbektelecom JSC established a branch Uzbektelecom Mobile for the development and operation of cellular network in the range of 450 MHz. In 2009, Uzmobile (trademark of Uzbektelecom Mobile) launched EV-DO Rev.A technology in several regions of the country on the basis of CDMA-450.

According to 2012 results, the number of Uzmobile's subscribers increased 2.1-fold and exceeded 200,000 people. The level of coverage in the country is 71 percent.
