Iran’s nominee Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Adeli elected Secretary General of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) during the 15th ministerial meeting of the GECF which started in Iran's capital city of Tehran on November 3, Fars news agency reported today.

Iran's nominee Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Adeli elected Secretary General of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) during the 15th ministerial meeting of the GECF which started in Iran's capital city of Tehran on November 3, Fars news agency reported today.

Adeli who replaced Russian Leonid Bukhanovsky will serve at the post for next two years.
Adeli served as Iran's Ambassador to Japan from 1986 to 1989. Soon thereafter, at the age of 36 he was appointed Governor of Central Bank of Iran (CBI).

At his last official post, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary Plenipotentiary of Iran to the United Kingdom from 2004 to 2005.

The GECF is a multi-layered and an intergovernmental organization of the world's leading natural gas producers comprising Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

Kazakhstan, Iraq, the Netherlands and Norway have the status of observer members.

The first GECF summit meeting was held in the Qatari capital of Doha on November 15, 2011.
The GECF was founded in Tehran in 2001 and its member states control over 70 percent of the world's natural gas reserves as well as more than 80 percent of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production.
