Kazakh airline ups passenger traffic in 2013

Kazakh airline Air Astana increased passenger traffic by 13.5 percent to 3.7 million people in 2013 compared to 2012, the company reported on March 17.

Kazakh airline Air Astana increased passenger traffic by 13.5 percent to 3.7 million people in 2013 compared to 2012, the company reported on March 17.

"Cargo transportation exceeded 20,000 tons, mail transportation hit 1.5 tons in this period," the company said.

Air Astana's fleet consisted of 30 aircrafts as of the end of 2013. Average age of the carrier's aircrafts hit 6.4 years due to removal of old Fokker-50 and acquisition of new 767-300 ER and Airbus A320.

Additionally, Air Astana increased its Embraer 190 fleet to eight aircrafts.

Launching of new flights and increasing of international flights frequency improved flights connections and resulted in increase of transit passengers, the company said. The number of international tourists grew by 113 percent in 2013 compared to 2012.

Air Astana is the flag carrier and the national airline of Kazakhstan. It is a joint venture owned by the Government of Kazakhstan (51 percent) and British BAE Systems (49 percent).
