Azerbaijan's transport sector slightly increases traffic freight volumes

Some 87.4 million tonnes of cargo have been shipped in January-May 2014, which is 2.1 percent higher than the same period last year, according to the State Statistics Committee report on the first five months of 2014.

The volume of non-oil goods increased by 3.7 percent totaling 60.5 million tonnes in January-May, the report said.

Some 75.6 percent out of the total volume transported accounted for the private sector in January-May. Some 55.4 percent of out of all cargo transported via automobile road, 30.4 percent - pipelines, 9.5 percent - by railway, 4.7 percent - by sea.

Some218 million tonnes of cargo were transported in Azerbaijan last year, which is 3.4 percent more than in 2012.

Some 709.8 million people were transported through passenger transport in January-May, which is 5.8 percent more than the same period in 2013. Most of the passengers were transported by automobile transport (86.9 percent) and metro (12.9 percent).

Some 8.3 million tones of cargo was transported by railway in January-May versus 9.2 million tonnes in the same period of 2013.

Some 4.2 million tonnes of cargo were transported through maritime transport in January-May versus 5.1 million tonnes in January-May 2013. All transported cargo accounted for international operations. The volume of cargo handled at ports of Azerbaijan amounted to 5.3 million tonnes in January-May 2014.

Some 48.3 million tonnes of cargo accounted for automobile transport which is 3 percent more than in January-May 2013.

The volume of the passenger traffic amounted to 616.9 million people (up 6.1 percent) for the reported period. Some 96.1 percent of passengers were transported by buses and 3.9 percent - by cars.

The volume of passenger traffic was made up 91.3 million people, increasing by 4.22 percent compared with January-May 2013.

Some 609.100 passengers were transported by air in January-May, which is 3.22 percent more than the same period in 2013. Some 0.2 percent of transportation of this kind of transport accounted for the private sector.
