Iran plans to launch 14 new power plants by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2015).

The Managing Director of Iran Power Development Company (IPDC) Majid Salehi said that once the power plants come on stream, some 2,156 megawatts will be added to the country's total power generation capacity, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on June 22.

He went on to add that ten out of the mentioned 14 power plants have been synchronized with the country's national power grid.

"The other four will be synchronized to the power grid in the near future," he said.

Around eight of the mentioned units belong to the private sector, according to Salehi.

"Iran's current electricity production is over 72 gigawatts," he said.

The country's electricity consumption peak is expected to reach 50,000 megawatts in summer.

The power generation capacity in Iran has grown by seven percent annually over the past ten years.

Tehran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has ‎attracted ‎more than $1.1 billion investments for the construction of ‎three new power ‎plants.

Iran should annually add 5,000 MW to its power generation capacity, in accordance with the Fifth Five-Year Economic ‎Development Plan.

Iran plans to boost ‎its electricity generation capacity to ‎‎reach 73GW, by the end of the Fifth Five-Year Economic ‎Development Plan (March ‎‎2016).
