The next meeting of the Council of Elders has kicked off in the city of Turkmenabat inTurkmenistan's Lebap province on Oct.20, a source close to the organization of event told Trend.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and government members are taking part in the meeting.

The meeting is being held on the eve of the 23rd anniversary of Turkmenistan independence to be celebrated on Oct.27.

The Council of Leaders gathers each year to discuss the issues of national importance. It also functions as an advisory body.

"It is an important political event which will focus on the priority issues related to the further national development, decide on the immediate tasks of the domestic and foreign policy," Berdimuhamedov said during the latest government meeting, according to the Turkmen media outlets.

The successful completion of all the work planned for 2014 and creation of a good platform for the work planned for 2015 is among our key tasks, the head of state added.

Turkmen media outlets said that such annual meetings are important for strengthening unity among the people, effective use of the rich life experience and the wise principles of the elders while addressing the topical issues of national importance.
