Turkey imposes penalty for violating e-commerce requirements

The Turkish Parliament imposed an administrative penalty for violating the law "On e-commerce" in the amount of 1,000-10,000 Turkish liras, Anadolu ageny reported Oct. 24.

The companies in Turkey are not allowed to send consumers promotional SMS, e-mails and faxes without their consent, according to the amendments to the law.

"The companies violating the new law will be fined," the agency said.

The changes in the law also entitle consumers to return goods purchased via online stores.

E-commerce turnover amounted to 37 billion lira in Turkey as of the first eight months of 2014.

This figure was 35 billion lira in 2013. As of 2014, e-commerce turnover is expected to be 50 billion lira.

The official exchange rate is 2.2408 TRY/USD Oct. 24.
