Passenger traffic between Azerbaijan, Iran via Astara increases

The passenger traffic between Iran and Azerbaijan via the Astara customs checkpoint has increased in the last eight months, the Head of Iran's Astara Border Terminal Jalal Diansaei said, the ISNA news agency reported Nov. 30.

Over 476,370 people have crossed the border checkpoint of Astara during the first eight months of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 21- Nov. 22), the official added.

In the mentioned period, about 233,000 people exited the border checkpoint, indicating a six-percent increase year on year, Diansaei noted.

The number of people who entered Iran via the checkpoint also increased by eight percent and stood at 243,280 people, he said.

The passengers who crossed the Astara checkpoint are mainly citizens of Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Belarus, Germany, Iraq, China, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Ukraine, Diansaei noted.

About one million people crossed the border of Azerbaijan and Iran in the last Iranian fiscal year (ended on March 21).

According to the Iranian officials, most of the people crossing the border to Iran from Azerbaijan go for a medical treatment.

Iran unilaterally abolished visa requirements for citizens of Azerbaijan.

Visa is not required for Azerbaijani citizens visiting Iran from January 1, 2010.
