Kazakh company Samruk-Energy JSC inked a cooperation memorandum with the China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE) to develop the country's Shelek region and divert the Kensu River to the Bestyubinsk Reservoir, according to a message from the company.

The memorandum was signed following a meeting of the Kazakhstan-China Business Council in Astana.

"The document's objectives include the development of cooperation and attracting investment in the power sector of Kazakhstan," the message read. "At the same time a special attention is paid to the development of renewable energy sources and implementation of projects to provide electricity to the southern region of Kazakhstan."

The document sets the basic parameters of development of Shelek region and transfer of Kensu River waters to the Bestyubinsk water reservoir.

Bestyubinsk water reservoir is the headwork of the Moinak hydro power plant on the Charyn River that flows over the territory of Raiymbek district of Kazakhstan's Almaty province.

Moinak hydro power plant with the regulating Bestyubinsk reservoir is a complex hydrosystem meeting the region's demand for electricity and irrigation.

The main purpose of construction of this hydrosystem is to produce electricity and to transmit it to the power supply system in order to meet the demand for electricity in South Kazakhstan during the peak period.

Kazakhstan's south region suffers from electricity shortage.
