Uzbekistan’s sole copper producer to complete 5 investment projects by late 2014

Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AMMC) of Uzbekistan will complete five investment projects with the total cost of $156.78 million by late 2014, AMMC management told Trend on Dec.16.

The source said currently, the construction of a new sulfuric acid shop at a copper smelting plant is in the final stage. The cost of the project is equal to $72.23 million. Its design capacity is 500,000 metric tons of sulfuric acid per year.

The contract for the construction of the technological part has been signed with German Outotec GmbH.

AMMC also plans to complete the technical re-equipment of an oxygen plant by late 2014. The project worth of $24.4 million is being implemented by the US Red Mountain Energy Corp. in 'turnkey' conditions.

The construction of an underground mine with the capacity of 80,000 metric tons of ore per year at Kayragach gold ore deposit (Tashkent province) and reconstruction of a zinc plant has been completed. The cost of these projects totaled $26.96 million and $25.69 million respectively.

A plant for production of sanitary ware products was put into operation jointly with Chinese companies in Jizzakh province. The project cost was equal to $7.5 million.

"The implementation of the first project will allow to provide the Angren gold processing plant with raw materials," the source said, adding that the volume of concentrate processing has increased by 80,000 metric tons per year as a result of reconstruction of the zinc plant.

The source said the plant in Jizzakh will produce 1.2 million shut-off valves per year.

The source reminded that a cement plant with the design capacity of 350,000 metric tons of white cement and 760,000 metric tons of Portland cement was commissioned in Jizzakh province in March 2014. The project cost totaled $114.18 million.

The project is financed with the own funds of AMMC, loans from the Reconstruction and Development Fund of Uzbekistan and local banks.

Almalyk MMC is the sole copper producer in Uzbekistan. It has the right to develop the copper-molybdenum and lead-zinc ore deposits near the Almalyk city.

Almalyk MMC produces refined copper (cathode), metallic zinc, lead concentrate and other products. It accounts for around 90 percent of silver production and 20 percent of gold production in the country.
