Railway infrastructure privatization scheduled in Turkey

Turkey's railway infrastructure will be privatized in March 2015, Turkey's Minister of Transport, Shipping and Communications Lutfi Elvan was quoted Jan. 22 by Anadolu agency as saying.

He said that the country is preparing for the railway infrastructure privatization.

"Privatization is necessary to resolve the issue with the technical backwardness of Turkey's railway infrastructure," the minister said.

Earlier, Elvan reported that Turkey's railway infrastructure will be privatized in early 2015.

He said that more than 90 percent of the railways was reconstructed in Turkey.

The Turkish national railway company was founded in 1927. The total length of railways is 8,600 kilometers in Turkey.

Turkey plans to increase the total length of railways up to 25,000 kilometers by 2023.
