The Azerbaijan-Kuwait cooperation potential is great, Azerbaijani ambassador to Kuwait Tural Rzayev said.

He added that the countries have good relations, which are based on mutually beneficial cooperation.

"The two countries always support each other in the international arena," the ambassador said. "Kuwait has always supported the fair position of Azerbaijan in the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict both at a bilateral platform and the international arena."

"The international organizations have always supported Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Rzayev said. "There are four UN Security Council resolutions, the OIC resolutions, supporting Azerbaijan in this conflict on the basis of international law. Kuwait voices this position in this issue."

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.

"The political relations between the two countries are maintained by the regular political consultations," the diplomat said. "The mutual visits of officials are made at all levels."

It should be noted that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to Kuwait in 2009. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan was visited in 2013 by Kuwait's first deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.

Ambassador Tural Rzayevnoted that Azerbaijan also takes part in all major events held in Kuwait.

Kuwait will host on May 21 a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, where Azerbaijan will be represented as well.
