By Maksim Tsurkov - Trend:

Afghanistan will soon join the countries participating in the program of cooperation in the field of transport TRACECA (Europe-Caucasus-Asia), TRACECA National Secretary in Azerbaijan Akif Mustafayev told Trend April 1.

He said that in fact, a formal agreement with Iran on Afghanistan's joining TRACECA has already been received.

"Now Iran should apply with a formal note to Azerbaijan as a depositary country," said Mustafayev. "This note will be sent to all participating countries of TRACECA. Thus, the issue of Afghanistan's becoming a full member of a multilateral agreement will be resolved."

Afghanistan, along with Iran (based on the consent of the then 12 participants) joined TRACECA in 2005 at the Fourth Conference of the intergovernmental commission.

Iran ratified the accession to the TRACECA and soon became an active member of the organization. However, the ratification process in Afghanistan was delayed and ended only recently.

TRACECA is an international program of cooperation in the field of transport between the EU and its partner countries in Eastern Europe, on the Southern Caucasus and Central Asia. The organization has a permanent Secretariat in Baku.

At present the countries participating in TRACECA are: Azerbaijan, Bulgaria,
Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova, Romania, Tajikistan,
Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Iran.
