President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov and Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj discussed issues of the practical implementation of the construction project of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline during a meeting in Ashgabat, the message of the government of Turkmenistan said Apr.9.

During the meeting the sides said that TAPI is intended to make a significant contribution to sustainable socio-economic development of states of the Asian region and contribute to the strengthening of global energy security as a whole, having become a true bridge of peace, friendship and long-term cooperation on the Eurasian continent, said the message.

A trend towards intensification of productive mutually beneficial partnership between Turkmenistan and India in all directions, which has recently taken shape, was stated during the discussion.

The basic document for the promotion of TAPI project is the Ashgabat interstate agreement of the state parties on the commencement of the practical implementation of the TAPI project signed in late 2010.

The design capacity of TAPI is 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The estimated length is 1,735 kilometers.

It is expected that the pipeline worth $7.6 billion will extend from the largest gas field in Turkmenistan, Galkhynysh, through the Afghan cities of Herat and Kandahar to the Fazilka settlement on the Pakistani-Indian border.

Indian media had previously reported that ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL) is studying its possibilities of investment in the economy of Turkmenistan and shows interest for the development of the largest gas field of the country. The report said that during the talks in New Delhi, the Turkmen side noted a preference for service contracts, whereas India is interested in signing a production sharing agreement (PSA).
