The commissioning date of a new airport in the province of Ordu in northeast Turkey has been announced, Anadolu agency reported April 28.
This airport will be put into operation on May 22, 2015 and will handle domestic flights.
There are 69 airports in Turkey, 21 of them - international, 31 - for domestic flights, as well as 17 military airfields.
Moreover, six new airports are being built in Turkey, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey said earlier. A foundation laying ceremony of the third airport was held in Istanbul on June 7, 2014.
The agreement on construction of the third airport in the city was signed in May 2013. Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon consortium of companies won the tender for the airport's construction by offering 22.1 billion euros for participation in the project.
Earlier, the Air Transport Department of the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend that the construction of the airport would cost 10 billion TRY.
The third airport is being built near the Lake Terkos in the north of Istanbul. Initially, the airport will serve 90 million passengers per year and further, this figure will increase to 150 million.
The third airport of Istanbul is expected to be one of the largest airports in the world and will be named after the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The official exchange rate is 2.7293 TRY/USD as of April 28, according to the Central Bank of Turkey.
