Over 3.374 million metric tons of goods were transited via Iran during the first quarter of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 21- June 21).

The figure indicates a slight rise by 1.2 percent compared to the same month of preceding year, Mohammad Javad Atrchian, director general of Border Transit and Terminals of the Roads Maintenance and Transportation Organization of Iran said.

About 1.738 million metric tons of the transited goods were oil products, meanwhile some 1.636 million metric tons of non-oil goods were transited during the three-month period, Atrchian said, Iran 's official IRIB news agency reported July 5.

The transited non-oil goods mostly consisted of chemicals, fuels, food and cotton, he said.

Iraq, Turkey and the UAE were the main sources of the goods transited into Iran, he added.

Iranian trucks transported some 61 percent of the goods, meanwhile some 21 and 10 percent of the goods transited by Iraqi and Turkish trucks respectively, Atrchian noted.

Imam Khomeini port was the top border point in terms of transiting goods to foreign countries followed by the port of Bandar Abbas, then Bazargan, Lotfabad and Sarakhs border checkpoints, he stated.

Atrchian further said that Parvizkhan border checkpoint in western province of Kermanshah port was the most active custom checkpoint in terms of transited goods into Iran, followed by Bandar Abbas port, Bashmaq, Bazargan and Lotfabad border checkpoints.

The official earlier said that the volume of transited goods could reach 15 million metric tons during the current Iranian fiscal year (will be ended on March 20, 2016) if necessary measures are taken on decreasing transit costs and time.

About 12 million metric tons of goods were transited via Iran in the past Iranian fiscal year (ended on March 20), indicating a 6.5 percent increase year on year.
