It is planned to construct 14 gas-turbine thermal power plants with the total installed capacity of 3,854 megawatts in accordance with the concept for development of the power industry in the country through 2020, 'Neutral Turkmenistan' newspaper reported.


Gas-turbine power plants with the capacity of around 149 megawatts each have been commissioned in Ahal, Mary and Lebap provinces, according to the newspaper.

A gas-turbine plant with the capacity of 252.2 megawatts has been built in Ak Bugday district, while the construction of a power plant with the capacity of 504.4 megawatts is at the final stage in Derweze district of Ahal province.

Moreover, the construction of a gas-turbine power plant with the capacity of 252.2 megawatts has started in Lebap province. Another thermal power plant with the capacity of nearly 400 megawatts will be constructed there in the coming years.

This program envisages increasing the production level of electricity in Turkmenistan to 26.38 billion kilowatt hours by 2020.

Currently, 11 power plants operate in the country, according to the newspaper.

Three small gas-turbine power plants with the capacity of 149 megawatt each, as well as another one with the capacity of 252 megawatt were commissioned in Turkmenistan in 2014 alone.
