Iran and Brazil can boost cooperation in combating terrorism and drug trafficking.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met with his Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff in New York, calling all countries to set the fight against terrorism as a priority, especially in Syria,Iran's Mehr news agency reported on September 26.

"We should not let terrorist groups be turned into terrorist governments," Rouhani stressed.

Syria is grappling with fighting terrorists and its people have been facing many calamities, including displacement, Rouhani said.

"If all countries prioritize fighting terrorism in Syria, it could be an appropriate way to resolve problems and carry out political reforms in Syria."

Brazilian president, for her part, said that Iran can play a key role in stabilizing the region.

"Undoubtedly, Syria needs political reforms, but for the time being, the first priority is to help its people not to be displaced and homeless," she said.

Iran's Judiciary chief Sadeq Amoli Larijani said the US and other Western countries are responsible for the recent surge of refugees to Europe.

"The crisis is the product of the West's support for terrorism, and now they are stuck in a desperate situation by influx of thousands of migrants and refugees from lands where the US and the West fostered terrorists," he said.
