Envoy: Tehran, Baku plan to boost banking ties (exclusive)

In the wake of the lifting of international sanctions against Iran, Tehran and Baku are planning to develop cooperation in banking sector as setting up joint banks is on the agenda, an Iranian diplomat said.

Iranian Ambassador to Baku told Trend Jan. 19 that the level of the activity of the branch of Bank Melli Iran in Baku will increase in future.

A number of Iranian and Azerbaijani entrepreneurs have considered the expansion of tourism business between the two countries particularly with the religious and health purposes, he added.

The ambassador further added that about one million tourists from Azerbaijan visit Iran annually.

Iranian hospitals in the provinces of Ardabil, Gilan, East Azerbaijan and the capital city of Tehran admit a number of patients from Azerbaijan as they enjoy proper quality and equipment.

The ambassador further said that Azerbaijani investors can cooperate in building hotels in Iran.

In a joint statement on Jan. 16, the EU's High Representative Federica Mogherini and Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced the implementation of the JCPOA and the removal of economic sanctions on Iran.

According to the statement, EU has confirmed that legal framework, providing for lifting of its nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions, is effective.

Iranian and Azeri officials have called for expansion of trade ties between the neighboring countries as their trade turnover currently stands below $300 million.
