Tehran, Iran, March 14

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Iranian experts have wrapped up the design of a new airplane, which should be built by European or US companies.

The designing was ordered by former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2012. Currently, the project is under supervision of the Defense Industries Organization of Iran, said the project's manager Alireza Jahangirian said, Mehr news agency reported March 12.

Jahangirian said the aircraft will have 100-150 seats. He added that his team decided to have foreign companies build the aircraft only after Iran was freed from sanctions under the recent nuclear deal.

Iran's aviation industry experienced a lot of difficulties after the country got hit with sanctions and the industry got barred from international services and goods.

The country's aviation fleet has grown decrepit due to the sanctions, with flight incidents becoming increasingly frequent.
