Cargo transportation through Azerbaijani segment of TRACECA decreases

About 11.8 million tons of cargo was transported via the Eurasian transport corridor (TRACECA, Europe-Caucasus-Asia) through Azerbaijan’s territory in January-March 2016, which is by 12.4 percent less than the same period of 2015.

About 11.8 million tons of cargo was transported via the Eurasian transport corridor (TRACECA, Europe-Caucasus-Asia) through Azerbaijan's territory in January-March 2016, which is by 12.4 percent less than the same period of 2015, said the country's State Statistics Committee (SSC).

The main reason of decrease of the cargo transportation's total volume is the decline in cargo transportation via railway and maritime transport - by 24.7 percent and 44 percent respectively. Volume of cargo transportation by motor traffic increased by 2.8 percent during the reporting period.

Some 64.1 percent (7.59 million tons) of the total volume of the transported cargos accounted for motor traffic, 27 percent (3.19 million tons) - for railway, 8.9 percent (1.05 million tons) - for maritime transport, said SSC.

Meanwhile, 82.7 million passengers were carried via the corridor through Azerbaijan's territory in January-March 2016, which is by 2.3 percent more than in January-March 2015.

TRACECA is an international cooperation program in the sphere of transport among the EU and partner-countries in Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. The organization has a permanent secretariat in Baku.

TRACECA member-states are Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Iran.
