Electricity generation up in Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan produced more than 15.822 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in January-August 2016, the country’s Energy Ministry said Sept. 15.

Growth rate of electricity generation was 105.14 percent during the period.

Turkmenistan exported 2.461 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. Here the growth rate was 118.7 percent.

In 2015, electricity generation in Turkmenistan was 22.5 billion kilowatt hours, while its export totaled 3.2 billion kilowatt hours.

Currently, work is underway to expand the electricity export to Afghanistan and Iran.

Moreover, the country studies the possibility of transporting electricity to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and countries in the Caucasus.

Turkmenistan plans to increase the electricity production to 27.4 billion kilowatt hours by 2020 and to 35.5 billion kilowatt hours by 2030.
