Unemployment rate exceeds 11% in Turkey

The unemployment rate increased by 1.2 percentage points (by 435,000 people) and reached 11.3 percent in Turkey in August 2016 compared to the same period of 2015, the Turkish Statistical Institute said in a message published on its website November 15.

According to the message, as of late August 2016, the total number of unemployed in the country reached 3.493 million people.

The unemployment rate in the non-agricultural sectors increased by 1.3 percentage points up to 13.7 percent, the institute said.

According to the message, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15-24 has reached 19.9 percent (1.6 percentage point increase), while among people aged 15-64 - 11.5 percent (1.2 percentage point increase).

The number of people employed in agriculture sphere decreased by 257,000 people in the reporting period. The number of people employed in the non-agricultural sector increased by 579,000 people in the reporting period.

Some 21 percent of people are employed in agriculture sector, 19 percent - in industry, 7.4 percent - in construction sector and 52.6 percent - in the service sector, the institute said.

The number of people employed in agriculture decreased by 1.2 percentage points, in industry - by 0.3 percentage points, in construction - by 0.1 percentage points, while increased by 1.6 percentage points in the service sector in August 2016 compared to the same period of 2015, the message said.
