The Turkish section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway will be ready to put into operation in mid-2017, said Javid Gurbanov, head of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC.

Gurbanov made the remarks while addressing the International Rail Business Forum titled “Strategic partnership 1520: The Caspian region”, which kicked off in Baku Nov. 25.

He said that the project is being implemented at a good pace.

“The railway’s Georgian section, the construction of which is financed by Azerbaijan, will be ready until the end of the year,” added Gurbanov.

The BTK railway is being constructed on the basis of the Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement.

The peak capacity of the railway will be 17 million tons of cargo per year. At the initial stage, this figure will be one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
