Azerbaijan has defined priority directions in the development of the tourism sector by 2020, according to the Strategic Road Map for the development of specialized tourism industry in the country published in Azerbaijan’s official press.

It is planned to fully use Baku’s tourism potential, the document noted.

“Nowadays, Baku, which has a more developed infrastructure, attracts attention of a big number of foreign tourists,” the document said. “In order to use this potential more effectively, it is planned to establish a special control mechanism, ensure the increase of people’s awareness, upgrade packages of tourist services, as well as effectively promote various tourism activities.”

“This implies improvement of management at the national level, creation of tourist and recreational areas, development of regional tourism infrastructure in order to eliminate seasonal prevalence, improvement of air traffic, as well as simplification of visa procedures,” the document said.

Moreover, the Strategic Road Map envisages the development of tourism in Azerbaijan through the implementation of regional tourism initiatives.

“To this end, in order to create a more integrated tourism sector, it is planned to invest in the development of health tourism, winter tourism, ecotourism and other types of tourism,” said the document.

Another goal is to invest in educational programs in the field of tourism and improvement of industry systems of standardization and certification, according to the document.

“Achieving these goals will increase Azerbaijan’s GDP by 293 million manats directly and by 172 million manats indirectly, it will create 35,000 new jobs, some 25,000 of which will be created directly in the tourism sector,” the document said. “Implementation of these objectives will require investments worth 350 million manats.”
