Uzbekistan’s Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AMMC) launched a new copper-smelting furnace worth $97.7 million, a source in the AMMC told Trend.

German Engineering Dobersek GmbH company completed the construction of the copper-smelting furnace with submerged lance with the capacity of 17,000 tons of copper per year on a turnkey basis in late 2016, the source said.

The AMMC signed a contract worth $91.59 million with the German company following the tender results in 2014.

The project was financed through the own funds of the AMMC in the amount of $34.6 million, loans from Uzbekistan’s Fund for Reconstruction and Development ($29 million), loans from the Ipoteka Bank, the joint-stock commercial mortgage bank ($34.1 million).

The AMMC is the only copper producer in Uzbekistan. Kalmakyr and Sary-Cheku deposits of copper-porphyry ores (Tashkent province), Uch-Kulach deposit of lead-zinc-barite ores (Jizzakh province), as well as Khandiza deposit of polymetallic ores (Kashkadarya province) are raw material base of the company.

The combine produces refined copper, metallic zinc, lead concentrate and other products. The AMMC accounts for about 90 percent of silver and 20 percent of gold production in Uzbekistan.
