Cargo traffic increases in Azerbaijan

Some 16.7 million tons of cargo were transported by Azerbaijan’s modes of transport in January 2017, that is, by 4.3 percent more than in January 2016, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said in a report.

Non-oil cargo traffic increased by 5.1 percent and amounted to 12.1 million tons for the year.

According to the report, some 77.1 percent of the total cargo transported in January 2017 accounted for private sector.

Some 57.1 percent of the total cargo was transported by vehicles, 31.3 percent – by pipelines, 7.7 percent – by trains, 3.8 percent – by ships, and 0.1 percent – by planes.

Some 141.4 million passengers were transported in January 2017, that is, by 2.7 percent more than in January 2016. Some 87 percent of passengers were transported by vehicles, 12.8 percent by subway, the rest part – by other types of transport.

Some 1.3 million tons of cargo were transported by trains in January 2017, which is by 20.7 percent more than in January 2016, the report said.

On average, the daily number of loaded railcars was 358, while the number of unloaded railcars was 452.

Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction of the railway amounted to 13,700 tons, western – 4,800 tons, southern – 1,600 tons.

Some 641,100 tons of cargo were transported by ships in January 2017, or by 51.3 percent more than in January 2016. Some 38.9 percent of the transported cargo accounted for oil cargo.

Some 894,700 tons of cargo were handled at the Azerbaijani ports in January 2017.

According to the report, some 9.5 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles in January 2017, which is by 2.3 percent more than in January 2016.

Some 122.9 million people were transported by vehicles in January 2017 (an increase by 1.9 percent as compared to January 2016), 96.5 percent of these passengers were transported by buses and 3.5 percent by vehicles.

Some 18.1 million people were transported by subway in January 2017, that is, by 8 percent more than in January 2016.

Moreover, some 146,700 passengers were transported by planes in January 2017, or by 28 percent more than in January 2016. Some 0.1 percent of air traffic accounted for private sector during the reporting period, the report said.
