Karshi-Termez railway electrification to wrap up in September

Uzbekistan Railways JSC plans to complete the electrification of the Karshi-Termez railway section in southern Uzbekistan in September 2017, the company management told Trend.

“The first electric train on this section will be launched in September,” said the company official, adding about 70 percent of the entire section is electrified.

It was previously reported that Uzbekistan Railways JSC started implementation of the project for electrification of the 325-km Karshi-Termez railway section in 2015.

The cost of the project, designed to increase capacity of the Karshi-Termez section, is $388.23 million.

The project is carried out at the expense of Uzbekistan Railways and a loan of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) worth $220.6 million.

Overall, 1,700 kilometers of Uzbek railways are electrified as of today, 500 kilometers of them were commissioned in 2016.
