WB plans to finance water, gas projects

The World Bank (WB) does not exclude the opportunities for financing some infrastructure projects under the new program on Country Assistance Program (CAS).

Baku office of the WB told Trend two water projects could be implemented under the programs. "Besides, a large-scale water project focused on regions could be implemented under the CAS, while initially a project on the installation of water meters will be carried out with major accent on the capital," they said.

Under the CAS it is also planned to carry out a project on the expansion of the capacity of Garadagh and Kalmaz underground gas reservoirs (UGR). "Under the project the bank could finance the expansion of the capacity of gas supply facilities and scales of the gas reservoirs,” a government source said.

The feasibility study of the project on the reconstruction of the Garadagh and Kalmaz UGR has been designed. The project is part of Sate Program on the development of fuel and energy complex of Azerbaijan in 2005-2015. As initial estimations, $200m is required for the implementation of the project, which will enable to boost the capacity of the UGR to 3 billion cu m.

The Cabinet told Trend the WB was ready to participate in the implementation of the gas project directed the rehabilitation of the gas distribution system. The project should concern not only Baku, but also the regions. "However, for the time being the discussions over the projects are only of preliminary character,” the same source said.
