The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has awarded 72 students of Azerbaijani universities with scholarship cards.

The awarding ceremony, held on Friday, was attended by SOCAR president Rovnag Abdullayev, Azerbaijani Education Minister Mikayil Jabbarov and rector of Baku State University Abel Maharramov.

Some 100 manats will be transferred to the card of each student monthly.

During his speech at the event, Rovnag Abdullayev spoke about SOCAR's personnel policy carried out in recent years. Abdullayev said that, in 2005 the young personnel accounted for about 15 percent of the total number of employees of SOCAR, whereas in 2013 this figure increased to 45 percent.

SOCAR implements internal scholarship program, under which some 224 students have studied in countries such as the U.S., Norway, the U.K. and others since 2005.

Projects in the oil and gas sector create demands for personnel, Abdullayev said.

According to him, it is expected to attract about 7,000 new employees within the second phase of the development of Shah Deniz gas and condensate field, as well as to create 10,000 new jobs under the Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline project.

"Up to 2,000 new job places will be created at the shipyard," Abdullayev said.

He said that, currently the work has been initiated on the construction of a new complex for oil and gas processing and petrochemical production.

Some 15,000 new jobs will be created in 2013-2020 as part of this project.

The official exchange rate for Sept. 27 is 0.7845 AZN / USD.
