Azerbaijan, Baku, October 16/Trend, H.Valiyev/

The State Committee for Standardisation, Metrology and Patents of Azerbaijan submitted proposals to the government on the transition to the Euro-3 standard. This regulates the content of harmful substances in the exhaust gases of vehicles with diesel and petrol engines, as well as the quality of fuel used in the country, head of the Department of Standardisation and Technical Regulation of the State Committee Namig Tagiyev told journalists on Monday.

According to him, currently the mechanism of using Euro-3 standard in the territory of Azerbaijan is under consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers. The relevant decision will be adopted in the coming days.

"Beginning from January 2014, the Euro-3 standard will come into force and in the subsequent years the stage-by-stage use of Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards will begin," the head of the department said. This procedure covers both cars and the fuel produced in the republic.

The Azerbaijani State Oil Company (SOCAR) is also ready to use the Euro-3 standard.

Currently the ecological standards of Euro-3 are used in the country with respect to cars and their spare parts.

Each transition to the subsequent Euro standard, for instance from Euro-3 to Euro-4, requires $1 billion.

Earlier, SOCAR Vice-President of refining David Mammadov said gasoline production in accordance with the Euro-3 standard is planned for 2014, when the work on reconstruction of the company's existing refineries will be completed.

Further improvement of the fuel quality to Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards will be possible after SOCAR commissions a new oil and gas processing petrochemical complex planned for the Garadagh district of Baku.

From August 1, 2012, a new standard called AZS 636-2012 Car resources, Environmental classes which envisages the introduction of Euro-3 standard for emissions of harmful substances by cars came into force in Azerbaijan.
