The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has begun working to eliminate leaks in two sections of the Mozdok Kazimagomed main gas pipeline, SOCAR said on Thursday.

The leaks were revealed at 206-km and 287-km of the gas pipeline through which SOCAR exports gas to Russia, according to the report.

Earlier, SOCAR temporarily suspended gas transportation to Russia because the gas pipeline at several sites crosses the Gandob-Khachmaz-Yalama-Russia highway which is under construction.

The date of resumption has not been announced.

Azerbaijani gas is supplied to Russia on the basis of the contract on the purchase and sale of Azerbaijani gas with a possibility of extension. The deal was signed between SOCAR and Gazprom in Baku on October 14, 2009.

According to a 2010 supplement to the contract, Gazprom was to receive two billion cubic meters in 2011 and over two billion cubic meters of gas in 2012. However, according to the results of last year, the Russians did not get the full amount of the planned volume.

The additional agreement to double the volume of Azerbaijani gas purchased by Russia from 1.5 to 3 billion cubic meters was signed by both sides in Sochi on January 24, 2012.
