Janub thermal power station generated about 1.17 billion kilowatt hours of electricity for the first six months of operation (as of January 1, 2014), Azerenergy (generation and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) said on Monday.

The power station generated over 345.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity in December, according to the report.

Janub power station, commissioned in early July 2013, is essential to strengthening the energy security of the Absheron Peninsula and the southern region of the country. The power station is important from the point of view of ensuring stable operation of the energy transmission and distributing systems.

The capacity of the station is 780 MW. It works on three types of fuel, namely, gas, diesel fuel and black oil. From this point of view, Janub power station is unique and has no analogue in Eastern Europe or the CIS.

The capacity of power stations owned by Azerenergy exceeds 6,000 megawatts. It has over 200 substations with a capacity of 500, 330, 220 and 110 kilovolt amperes, as well as eight hydro power stations and 13 thermo power stations.
