"Uzbekenergo" State Joint Stock Company signed contracts with China's Shanghai Electric and Uzbek-Russian "Uzelektroapparat-Electroshield" Joint Venture on the supply of equipment under the project on modernization of the energy infrastructure in the south-western Uzbekistan, co-financed by the World Bank, the representative of the Uzbekenergo said.

Within the framework of the contracts totaling approximately $40 million, Shanghai Electric and "Uzelektroapparat-Electroshield" will supply the necessary equipment, including transformers and batteries for the modernization of the network facilities of the Southwestern energy region, which includes the territory of Samarkand, Bukhara, Navoi and Kashkadarya regions.

In 2013 the World Bank and the Uzbek government signed a supplementary agreement providing allocation of $48.2 million for the modernization of the energy supply in the Southwest region.
WB funds were restructured under the loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD is a part of the World Bank) in the amount of $ 110 million. The loan was provided to Uzbekistan in 2011 for the construction of the high voltage electric power transmission lines of 500 kV "Talimarjan TPP -"Sogdiana" substation in the south of the country. Electric power transmission line with length of 218 kilometers was built in the summer of 2013. During the project implementation, the Uzbek side saved almost $50million loan from the IBRD by localizing the supply and technological implementations.

As reported, Uzbekistan plans to implement a program to modernize and to renew of 110-500 kilovolt electricity network worth about $ 600 million up to 2016.

In total, the program plans to renovate more than 24.9 kilometers of high-voltage lines (overhead) and construct 1,600 kilometers of new high-voltage lines. Most of them - 1,182 kilometers will be air, and 25.3 km - cable lines. Furthermore, some 400 transformer points and 13 substations with the capacity of 35 kilovolts will be constructed.

Today, the total length of electric power transmission lines in Uzbekistan exceeds 235,000 kilometres, including electric-power transmission lines with 220-500 kV - 7.500 kilometers, electric-power transmission lines with 35-110 kV - 28,200 kilometers, electric-power transmission line of 0.4-10 kV - about 200,000 kilometers.
