The Kazakh government intends to stimulate the reduction in energy intensity of national gross domestic product (GDP) within the framework of the energy conservation and energy efficiency program.

Kazakh Vice-Minister of Industry and New Technologies Albert Rau made the remarks at a briefing held at the Central Communications Service under President of Kazakhstan in Astana.

"The head of the state set a task during the first five-year implementation of the said program [until 2015] to reduce the energy intensity of coutry`s GDP by 10 percent, by 2020 -25 per cent, by 2050 - twice. Compared to 2008, at present energy intensity of GDP reduced by 13 percent. This is mostly due to structural changes in the economy. Thus, the economy grew faster rather than we have increased energy consumption," he said.

A number of measures taken under the program contributed to the increase of energy efficiency, he said.

"It was decided that it is necessary to make further legislative changes promoting this process. It is needed to focus on our 50 companies that spend 40 percent of all energy resources. If they will save 25 percent, then it will make 10 percent savings for the whole country," Rau added.
