Iran’s electricity consumption rises by nearly 2,000 megawatt

Iran's electricity consumption peak reached 41,932 megawatt hours on August 22.

The electricity peak on the mentioned day was 1,991 megawatt hours more than the same day in the previous year, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported on August 23.

The stored electricity of Iran's power plants also hit 1,430 megawatt hours in the mentioned day.

The country's industries consumed some 3,165 megawatt hours of electricity on August 22.

Managing Director of West Region Power Company Abdolaziz Karimi said on January 25 that Iran's electricity consumption peak will reach 51,000 megawatt hours in the current Iranian calendar year (which started on March 21), Iran's IRNA News Agency reported on January 26.

"The figure is expected to reach 54,500 megawatt hours in the Iranian calendar year of 1394 (to start on March 21, 2015)," he said.

The country's total electricity generation capacity has surpassed 71,000 megawatts.

The power generation capacity in Iran has grown by 7 percent annually during the past 10 years.
Tehran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has ‎attracted ‎more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of ‎three new power ‎plants.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.

Based on the Fifth Five-Year Economic ‎Development Plan, Iran should annually add 5,000 MW to its power generation capacity.

Iran plans to boost ‎its electricity generation capacity to ‎‎reach 73GW, by the end of the Fifth Five-Year Economic ‎Development Plan (March ‎‎2016).
