Oil transportation via BTC rises

Around 31.5 million metric tons of oil was transported via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline in Jan.-Nov. 2014, compared to 30.1 million metric tons in the same period of 2013, Azerbaijan's State Statistical Committee said in its report on the results of the first eleven months of 2014.

"BTC accounted for 75 percent of the total volume of oil transported via the main oil pipelines of the country in Jan.-Nov.," said the report.

Some 33 million metric tons of oil was transported via BTC in 2013, compared to 32.9 million metric tons in 2012.

In total, 41.8 million metric tons of oil was transported via the main oil pipelines of the country during the reporting period, which is 5.1 percent more than in Jan.-Nov. 2013, according to the Statistical Committee.

The total length of the BТС is 1,768 kilometers including a 443 kilometer long section running through Azerbaijan, a 249 kilometer long section in Georgia and a 1,076 kilometer long section in Turkey. The construction of the pipeline started in April 2003. It was filled with oil on May 18, 2005.

BTC Co. shareholders are: BP (30.1 percent), AzBTC (25 percent), Chevron (8.9 percent), Statoil (8.71 percent), ТРАО (6.53 percent), Eni (5 percent), Total (5 percent), Itochu (3.4 percent), Inpex (2.5 percent), ConocoPhillips (2.5 percent) and ONGC (2.36 percent).

About 5.9 billion cubic meters of gas was transported via the South Caucasus pipeline (Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum) in Jan.-Nov. 2014, compared to 4.3 billion cubic meters in the same period of 2013, according to the report.

Some 4.7 billion cubic meters of gas was transported via the South Caucasus pipeline in 2013, compared to 4 billion cubic meters in 2012.

In total, 19.6 billion cubic meters of gas was transported via the main gas pipelines of the country in Jan.-Nov. 2014, which is 10.1 percent more than in the same period of 2013, according to the report.

The length of the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline exceeds 700 kilometers. The gas produced from the Shah Deniz gas and condensate field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea is transported via this pipeline. Gas is delivered to Georgia and Turkey. At the same time, Azerbaijan is also a gas buyer.
