Iran's annual primary energy consumption surpassed 2 billion barrels of oil equivalent (OE).

The Managing Director of the Iranian Fuel Conservation Company (IFCO) Nosratollah Seifi told Shana news agency Apr.28 that the country's primary energy consumption was 1.76 billion barrels of OE in 2010, but the figure reached 2.077 billion barrels of OE during last fiscal year, which ended March 2015.

Iran suffers from high-energy consumption and usage growth as well as high-energy intensity. On the other hand, about 0.4 billion barrels of OE was wasted in Iran annually.

Below is Iran's actual fossil energy consumption per day according to the data derived from National Iranian Oil Refining & Distribution Company's (NIORDC) annual report.

Iran's energy intensity is very high, about two times more than global average. According to official statistics, for every thousand dollar gross revenue gain, about 0.63 ton of oil equivalent energy is consumed in the country.

Energy intensity (EE) is energy consumption relative to the gross domestic product (GDP).

Seifi warned that if the current energy usage growth continues at the current pace, the total energy production would be equal to consumption level in 2025.

Iran planned to decrease primary energy consumption level to 1.148 billion barrels of OE in 2020 to economize $449 billion until this date.

Iran needs $192 billion investment to decrease energy intensity rate by 50 percent (with assuming a 6-percent GDP growth annually) to economize more than $1,100 billion in next 15 years in total.
