Baku, Azerbaijan, June 2

By Jamila Aliyeva - Trend:

Azerbaijan and Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding which will enable both sides to cooperate in the oil and gas sector and work together in all upstream, midstream downstream projects, Iraqi Oil Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi told Trend.

On the basis of this memorandum, Iraqi and Azerbaijani companies can create joint ventures on the territories of both countries, as well as in third countries, according to Iraqi minister.

Answering the question about which proposals can Iraq make for Azerbaijan's oil and gas sector, Abdul-Mahdi said that it depends on the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR).

"Iraq cooperates with hundreds of companies, so it depends on both sides," he said.

Furthermore, Abdul-Mahdi said that Iraq has great potential for joining the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) project.

Speaking about the security in Iraq, the minister said that the international community and people outside of Iraq only listen to news and they think that everything in Iraq is insecure and unstable, but this is not true.

"SOCAR had been visiting Iraq for a long time and as a matter of fact, we have commercial contracts with SOCAR, so if SOCAR can work in Iraq securely, I think all the other companies can work in Iraq," he added.
