Turkmenistan stands ready to fivefold increase the electricity supply to Afghanistan taking into account the new powerful energy facilities being built in the country's Lebap and Mary regions, said Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

He was addressing a meeting in Kabul with the top leadership of Afghanistan, said the Turkmen government August 28.

Earlier it was reported that a work is underway in Turkmenistan to expand the electricity export to Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey.

The possibilities of directing the electricity to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and the countries in the Caucasus are also being explored.

Turkmenistan plans to increase the electricity generation to 27.4 billion kilowatts hours by 2020 and to 35.5 billion kilowatt hours by 2030.

The export of Turkmen electricity will rise to 6.9 billion kilowatt hours by 2020. Currently the country is exporting over 2.8 billion kilowatt hours of electricity.
