Tehran, Iran, Sept. 28

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Iran is going to build a power plant in the Iraqi city of Najaf, Iraqi Water Resources Minister Mohsin al-Shimri said.

Iraq needs about 20,000 MW of electricity and its current production is below that number, therefore talks were held with Iran and a contract was signed to launch the power plant, he added, Fars news agency reported Sept. 28.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 11th International Water and Wastewater Exhibition of Iran, he said so far Iran has well conducted projects in related areas in Iraq.

The Iraqi official said further talks with Iran are to follow and Iraq will consider the proposals of Iranian companies.

Iran has agreed to export between four and five billion kilowatt hours of electricity to Iraq per year.

Iran exported 4.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity to Iraq in Iranian fiscal year 1392 (March 2013-March 2014), but the figure declined to 2.5 billion kilowatt hours in the year ended in March 2015 due to damages on the transmission lines inside Iraq.
