France's oil and gas company Total will for the first time in Azerbaijan implement a project for platform power supply from shore, said Edouard Thibaut, the company's representative.

He made the remarks Nov. 5 at the SPE Annual Caspian Technical Conference and Exhibition in Baku.

Thibaut said the gas and condensate field "Absheron" in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea is well positioned for supply of electricity from the shore.

"The platform automatic control system will help reduce the cost of maintenance at sea," he said.

"The field's relatively close proximity to the shore ensures the availability of electricity from a gas processing plant in Sangachal. Thus, "Absheron" is ideal for implementation of the project for power supply from the shore."

The discovery of the "Absheron" field was announced in September 2011. A definitive investment decision on the field is expected to be taken in the last quarter of 2017.

Drilling of a first exploratory well will start at the field in Q3 2019, while the initial gas flow from the field is planned to be obtained in late 2021 or early 2022.

Potential reserves of the "Absheron" field are estimated at 350 billion cubic meters of gas and 45 million tons of condensate. Participants of the project on the "Absheron" field are: SOCAR (40 percent), Total (40 percent), and Gaz De France Suez (20 percent).
