By Elena Kosolapova - Trend:

The tense relations between Russia and Turkey can speed up the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor project, Liana Jervalidze, analyst of Georgian oil and Gas Corporation told Trend.

She made the remarks on the sidelines of the SOCAR International Caspian and Central Asia Downstream Conference - Trading, Logistics, Refining, Petrochemicals, the event dedicated to the 93rd anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev.

Jervalidze noted that Turkey is interested in reducing the gas dependence on Russia as soon as possible, therefore, it asks to speed up the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor project.

It will enable the country to receive additional volumes of gas from Azerbaijan more quickly and reduce the gas purchases from Russia, according to the analyst.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It envisages the transportation of gas from the Caspian Sea region to the European countries through Georgia and Turkey.

At the initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor projects. Other sources can also connect to this project at a later stage.

As part of the Stage 2 of the Shah Deniz development, the gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline.
