By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

Iran's South Pars gas field produced 400,000 tons of sulfur last fiscal year (ended March 20), indicating a 18-percent increase year-on-year, Massoud Hassani, managing director of South Pars Gas Complex Company, said.

Main part of the produced sulfur is exported due to its high quality, Hassani said, SHANA news agency reported May 1.

Also 170,000 tons of gas condensates were produced in the field during the 12-month period, which was 18 percent more compared to the preceding year.

The complex produces 1.631 million tons of ethane (10 percent more year-on-year), 1.716 million tons of propane (37 percent increase) as well as 1.716 million tons of butane (21 percent more year-on-year) last fiscal year, Hassani added.

He further said that 117 projects will be implemented at five refineries of the complex to decrease the pollution.

Gas flaring in the refineries of the complex has decreased by 43 percent, due to the taken measures, Hassani added.

South Pars, located in southern region, is divided into 24 development phases, and contains 40 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.

It covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers are situated in Qatar's territorial waters.

The Islamic Republic is producing over 420 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) of gas from South Pars, while the production level is projected to surpass 700 mcm/d by late 2018.
