Iran's gas deliveries to power plants in the first two months of the current fiscal year, which started on March 21, are still below the level of the same period of the last year.

Iran was planning to increase the gas supply to power plants by 7 billion cubic meters (bcm) in the current fiscal year (FY) to 65 bcm.

However, according to the latest weekly report, released by the Energy Ministry on May 31, Iran's power plants were supplied with 8.97 bcm of gas during the first two months of the current FY, or 7.6 percent less than the same period in the last FY.

During a period of two months from March 21 to May 21, Iran consumed 145 million liters of gas oil, as well as 467 million liters of fuel oil, which indicate 34.4 percent decrease and 6.4 percent increase, respectively, as compared to the same period of the last FY.

The lower gas deliveries to power plants happened while the country's total primary energy consumption and electricity generation decreased during the first two months of the current FY.

Iran generated 42.423 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) electricity during the mentioned period, about 600 million kWh less than the same period of the last FY.

During the first two months, the country's total primary energy consumption in the power sector also decreased by 7.56 percent, year-to-year.

It is not clear why Iran decreased gas deliveries to power sector in spring, but it seems Iran stopped gas production due to maintenance works.

Last month, Iran reported that production of gas in the phases 15 and 16 of the South Pars field stopped due to maintenance works. These phases, with more than 20 bcm/y of production capacity, became fully operational in mid-2015.

According to the Energy Ministry's report, Iran decreased electricity export by 78 percent to 300 million kWh in two months, while the imports increased by 6 percent to 789 million kWh.

During that period, Iran added 342 MW to its power generation capacity, which stands at 74,437 MW.

Iran plans to add 3,322 MW to its power generation capacity by March 2017.

The country consumed 231.233 billion kWh of electricity during the last FY, about 11.581 billion kWh more than the previous year.

Iran generated 279.348 billion kWh of electricity last year and its net electricity export stood at 5.563 billion kWh.

The huge difference between the production and consumption indicates the significant electricity lost in the transmission and distribution process.
