The Southern Gas Corridor is a key project, which is meant to bring gas all the way from the Caspian Sea into the European market, and remarkable progress has been seen on its implementation, Energy Union Vice-President Maros Sefcovic said at the BDEW Congress 2016 in Berlin.

Sevcovic's speech was published on the Euroean Commission's website.

"Last month I attended the inauguration ceremony of the works on the Trans Adriatic segment (TAP) in Thessaloniki, meaning it is now being built on European soil. By 2020 we expect to see gas flowing into Europe," Sefcovic said.

"This will be the conclusion but not the end. Once the route and the overall framework are tested, it will be easier to expand the Southern Gas Corridor beyond the initial volumes of 10 billion cubic meters a year," he said.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian Sea region to the European countries through Georgia and Turkey.

At the initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor project. Other sources can also connect to this project at a later stage.

As part of the Stage 2 of the Shah Deniz development, the gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline.
