Azerbaijan reduces electricity generation

Azerbaijan’s power plants generated 9.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in January-May 2016, or 7 percent less than in the same period in 2015, the State Statistics Committee’s report said.

During the reporting period, commercial electricity accounted for 8.9 billion kilowatt hours of the total volume of electricity production, or 6.8 percent less than in January-May 2015.

Thermal power plants accounted for 8 billion kilowatt hours of the total volume of commercial electricity production in January-May 2016, or 8.9 percent less than in the same period in 2015.

During the reporting period, Azerbaijan’s hydro power plants generated 822 million kilowatt hours of commercial electricity, or 15.9 percent more than in January-May 2015.

This is while the wind farms and solar power plants in the country produced 7.9 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 20.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity, respectively, in January-May 2016.

The generation capacity of Azerbaijan's power supply system increased up to 7,149 megawatts. This allows generating around 24 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
As a result, the country annually exports 2.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity.
