The project of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR for construction of a gas power plant in Malta will be completed before late 2016, a source in SOCAR told Trend Aug. 18.

The plant’s capacity will be 210 megawatts.

ElectroGas Malta Consortium, where SOCAR is represented with a 20-percent share by its marketing arm SOCAR Trading, was chosen to implement the gas power plant construction project in Malta.

“It was initially planned to launch the power plant in summer, but there were some difficulties with construction of a floating barge in Singapore, which have already been solved,” said the source. “The project’s first phase is expected to be launched by the year-end.”

SOCAR Trading also participates in the project as a supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), floating installation for storing the LNG, and equipment for LNG processing.

The plant’s construction costs 175 million euros and its capacity will allow meeting up to 50 percent of Malta’s electricity demand.

Headquartered in Geneva, SOCAR Trading was incorporated in December 2007 as the marketing arm of SOCAR with a mandate to market Azerbaijani barrels produced from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli field and other surrounding fields in Azerbaijan.
