Bulgaria names main potential gas supplier through Balkan hub

Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 29

By Maksim Tsurkov – Trend:

Bulgaria considers Azerbaijan as a major potential gas supplier through the Balkan gas distribution hub, Bulgaria’s Deputy Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov said Sept. 29 at the Azerbaijan-Bulgaria Intergovernmental Commission meeting on Economic Cooperation in Baku.

He said that the parties consider various cooperation options in the energy field, including Azerbaijani gas supplies through Bulgaria to third countries.

“Bulgaria sees Azerbaijan as the main potential source of gas for the Balkan hub,” Stankov said. “We plan to exchange experience in the issue of liberalization of the electricity system, study possibilities of electricity exchange after the establishment of the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe corridor [Southern Gas Corridor].”

The Southern Gas Corridor project envisages transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe through Georgia and Turkey.

At the initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor projects. Other sources can also connect to this project at a later stage.
